Best Workouts for 2019

The best workouts for 2019 all have a few key factors that differentiate themselves from those which haven’t and wont be as successful. This blog includes 5 trends which are at the top of the list for budding fitness addicts, who want to access fitness anywhere, at any time, and the ability to try a multitude of different workouts.

In the UK, over 20 million people are physically inactive. Finding a way to make exercise more attractive to this huge population of people who don’t like it will have massive benefits to their physical and mental health. Here are 5 ways in which exercise can become more exciting, more meaningful, and frankly, more likely to happen in 2019!

The fitness trend has been moving this way for many years, and will continue to become more adaptable, flexible, on-demand, accessible anywhere, specialist, trackable and wide in variety.

Biggest benefits: Convenience, Choice, Location-Independent.

Streaming your workout is very popular in 2019. In 2017, 94% of adults used a mobile phone for an average of 2 hours and 28 minutes were spent on a smartphone per day by users. That’s incredible, and the time we spend on our phones is only increasing.  But these statistics pave the way for making streaming workouts much more convenient and accessible. 20 years ago, only 26% of adults in the UK had a mobile phone, when 4G and even 3G had not even been invented yet!

If you travel a lot, work away from home and find yourself in hotel rooms regularly, streaming your workouts can often be the only way you can make sure you get your workout in. Not to mention the 50% of Brits who don’t know what to do in the gym, for those who are unmotivated and struggle to get to the gym, these streaming workouts are a lifeline.

Paid vs Free: There are tons of free workouts that you can access on YouTube, most aren’t worth their airtime, but some are worth it -if you can stomach waiting for adverts to load and sales pitches to sign up to their products in-between reps. If however, you’re financially invested in a workout program, studies have shown that you’re much more likely to stick to it and keep the physical rewards from it. The key here is accountability, which is one of the biggest motivators when starting and developing new positive habits.

Summary: Streaming workouts could be for you if you don’t have the time to get to the gym due to work requirements, or simply because you don’t like the gym environment. That’s the beauty of them - you can do them wherever you like. At home in your living room, in the park, in a hotel room or even on holiday by the pool. The flexibility and convenience of streaming workouts caters to your availability for time, location, and often completely your choice of type of workout.

HIIT Workouts

Biggest benefits: Work hard for a short period, Varied, Fun, No Equipment Required.

HIIT was #1 on the list of trends for ACSM’s Health and Fitness Journal, and there’s a bloody good reason for it - HIIT works. Click here to read more about HIIT and how to get started. The fact is that in a short space of time you can push your body to extraordinary levels, if exercising correctly, and equally achieve extraordinary results. It’ a no-brainer for those who are short on time, or like to enjoy some of the massive benefits attributed to this type of exercise (happy hormones, increased metabolism, better cardiovascular function).

Summary:  HIIT workouts are included in the best workouts for 2019 because they keep popping up year after year in all independent reviews. They are most popular because they are time-efficient and results-efficient. There is no better way to get a full body, gym-free, results-orientated workout than with some well crafted circuits!

Wearable Technology

Biggest benefits: Healthy distraction from the work you’re putting in, for number crunchers (nerds like me), genuine measure of performance and progress.

Wearable technology is cool. It just is. And having been on the bandwagon, off, and now back on, I can see both sides to it. Wearable technology includes fitness and activity trackers which can track heart rate, calories, sitting time and many more performance related metrics.

I got in the game with a nice FitBit Surge, and loved using it for tracking calories, heart rate performance and recovery. I was looking forward to determining my sleep patterns too, but it’s so unbelievably chunky, it was not conducive to my 1 arm above, 1 arm below ‘hug the pillow’ sleeping technique. I fell out of the habit as it’s a time investment. I’m now back in with a Garmin Forerunner 735XT, I use this in combination with the Garmin HRM-Tri chest strap for the most accurate measurements.

Summary: These devices are a great way to keep tabs on your fitness, and are a great source of data to compare your progress over time.

Group Fitness Classes

Biggest benefits: Feeling part of a group boosts your energy levels, motivation, and results.

Being part of a group to exercise has been on the rise for the last decade. With the rise of Military Fitness groups across many parks in the UK, and with spin and Zumba classes in every gym, it has become a very popular way to get your workout in - with others alongside you. There is a whole variety of group classes available, with practically any martial art or dance-based discipline that you can think of being offered as a group class if you look hard enough.

The benefits of having an encouraging instructor and well put together, fun workouts can have a massive motivating effect and help to boost the energy and effort that you put into the workout. Many will also have the added benefit of learning a new skill in the process! This will in turn lead to much greater physical benefits and a greater release of those happy hormones.

Group training classes are also a great entry level workout for beginners, or those who are out of the habit of exercise. They are a way of easing your way into working out, within a structure, where you have good examples of correct technique in a positive environment with great music to sweeten the deal.

Summary:  The best workouts utilise the key benefits of group classes: great music, positive and encouraging instruction, advice on technique and movement, promote a feeling of community and are exciting and enjoyable with also learning a new skill.

Hiring a PT

Biggest benefits: Reduce injury risk, Guidance & Motivation, Accountability, Makes exercise Enjoyable.

Hiring a Personal Trainer is one of the top 5 trends of 2019, and is one of the things you can do to ensure you have the best of workouts. Everyone can benefit from someone supporting them with motivation and encouragement, but the biggest benefit of a PT is the instruction of the exercise and the choice of exercises so that they are fun and effective.

Summary: Making sure that you have correct technique, are completing the right exercises, and that you’re completing them at the correct intensity and often enough, are the biggest benefits of hiring a Personal Trainer. Getting each of these things right is key to reaching your physical goals with exercise.
